Topic: BNC number on benefits verification letter  (Read 44682 times)

Reno119

Hello,

I noticed this morning while checking my social security account a change on my benefits verification letter.  It has a BNC number listed instead of my social security number. Anyone else notice the same change?  From what I can tell from Google it's a Beneficiary Notice Control Number.

Thanks

I mistyped, it's BNC.

I think this is similar to the plan to issue new medicare cards so that a person's SSN is no longer printed on the medicare card.

"In concert with CMS' efforts to remove the SSN from Medicare Cards, next year we plan to replace the SSN with the BNC on benefit verifications letters, which account for approximately 11 million notices."

You can read more here:
https://waysandmeans.house.gov/wpcontent/uploads/2017/05/20170523SS-Testimony-LaCanfora.pdf

Also: https://oig.ssa.gov/sites/default/files/audit/full/pdf/A-04-15-50070.pdf

"In 2015, an SSA cross-component workgroup considered options for removing full SSNs from correspondence and recommended that SSA delay the removal of SSNs from all notices at one time. However, SSA stated it will explore leveraging existing information technology projects to replace the SSN with the Beneficiary Notice Control Number on notices on a case-by-case basis as resources are available. The Acting Commissioner approved this recommendation. While we are encouraged by the new position, we believe SSA should adopt a timeframe for implementation."

Thank you.  I am still waiting to learn if I've been approved.... Is this an indication that I am eligible for Medicare?

I don't think it's an indication either way regarding medicare. SSA is just trying to remove full SSNs from all types of mailings and materials they generate. So people on medicare will notice changes on their medicare card and SSA materials but people not on medicare also will notice changes if they receive any type of mailing from SSA (or look at things like an online benefit verification letter). This is just my understanding of what's going on.

I'm at the post hearing stage and noticed a BNC code in place of my social security number when I click on the Benefits Verification Letter tab.  Anyone else out there notice a change on yours?

Thank you

Hello I just recently applied for SSI on March 8 and they just started to look at my medical records on March 27 I just noticed the BNC and the REF A on my benefit letter I'm not sure what it means but if we are being referred as a beneficiary that means will are getting some type of money right?

Hi, I'm at appeals council level and I'm under evaluation as we speak, and my Reference states A, and DI, and I'm not getting anything so I don't think matters, it could be past referencing, or just stating as us, we, are the beneficiaries of the prior or previous benefits, or just what it is.

No, beneficiary number does not mean approval or disapproval.  It just means that SSA is trying to put your Social Security number on less documents.

I agree with Helper.  Although I must say, it was exciting to have that brief moment of wishful hope!  😁 Back to reality.

Good thing I read this, mine changed too and I thought it meant approval, lol but I agree with Helper as well.  I'm waiting on decision still from ALJ and that would of been too easy!! :Main09:

Strengths grow in the moments when you think you can't go on, but you just keep going.

I know I am late to the party but I found this online and thought it might help someone

133.1What is the claim number?

The claim number is the social security number under which a claim is filed or benefits are paid. If you are an SSI beneficiary, your claim number is your nine-digit Social Security Number (SSN) (000-00-0000) followed by two letters such as EI, DI, DS, DC.

If you are a Social Security beneficiary, your claim number is the nine-digit SSN followed by one or more letters such as A, B, C, HA.

PM if you want the link Not sure if those letters represent the REF section since they are removing SSN off of mostly everything now like Helper said?

Hi,
I just now discovered this thread and read through it. I noticed that 2 people on this thread reported the appearance of a line on their Benefits Verification Letters under the BNC number that indicates "REF: A" (and other indicated it apparently also had additional letters after the "A").
Does anyone know what this "REF: A" means? Is "REF" short for the word "reference"? What does the letter "A" signify? Do most people just have this letter "A" listed  - or is it more common to have additional letters also listed?
To clarify, I'm referring to the lettering on the top right corner of the Benefits Verification Letter. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you.

My best guess is they used to list the code letter after the SSN and now it's listed separately under "Reference". For primary wage earners (like myself) my medicare number for example was my SSN xxx-xx-xxxxA. "A" being the coding for primary wage earners.

Doing a quick google search, I found this document which lists more codes and what they stand for:

https://www.hud.gov/sites/documents/DOC_10855.PDF

"The codes following a Social Security number indicate the type of benefits you are entitled to. The Social
Security number followed by one of these codes is often referred to as a claim number and they are only
assigned once you apply for benefits. These letter codes may appear on correspondence that you
receive from Social Security or on your Medicare card. They will never appear on a Social Security
number card.

For example, if the Social Security of the wage earner number is 123-45-6789, then once you apply for
retirement benefits; your claim number is 123-45-6789A. This number will also be used as your Medicare
claim number, once you are eligible for Medicare.
